About the Artwork

Ocypete (“the swift wing”) was one of the three harpies of Greek mythology, along with Aello and Calaeno. Half-woman and half-bird, the Harpies were creatures employed by the higher gods to carry out the punishment of crime. I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want this gal swooping down at me.

Harpies were seen as the personification of the destructive nature of wind. So, I wanted to portray a sense of movement with this one. Harpies of mythology can traditionally quite a bit less beautiful than this. However, I wanted to portray her as a lovely, airborne warrior.
